Welcome to this week’s standup!

Welcome to this week's standup!

Big one to announce this week - AFC is launching a podcast. It's called Life After Launch, it drops next week, and you can have a sneaky peek right now at lifeafterlaunchpod.com (check out those guest!!!) - links to subscribe incoming!

Which brings me to a favour. We're on the hunt for a better home to record our interviews - a podcast studio that fits 3 people, ideally free or on a partnership arrangement (we're very happy to talk sponsor spots, shoutouts, and getting you in front of this community). If you have a studio, know someone who does, or your office has a setup gathering dust, hit reply!

Right, on with the show.

On the board today:

  • What we learned at From Idea to Shipped (the short version)

  • Build your MVP in 2 days with Everest Engineering (I’ll be taking part in the workshop too!)

  • Meet AFC's newest members

  • Meet AFC's newest members

  • In Her Company is filling fast - 14 seats left

  • Partnership Opportunity: Teach a room full of founders - workshops + AFC Campus Sessions

  • Upcoming events across the ecosystem

Through our last AFC meetup, hosted with EverestEngineering, we talked about building with AI (fast and without a CTO).

The panel was one of our best - we were joined by Craig Brown (EverestEngineering), Julia Chang (Sated), and Nick Davenport (Vozi) who unpacked how founders actually get products built in 2026.

What we learned at From Idea to Shipped - The short version:

You don't have a moat, you have an edge. A day-zero founder's edge is validated by the market - deep industry networks or one customer ready to buy. Being smart isn't an edge. And with every model release, existing moats keep drying up. Nick watched a competitor's platform moat evaporate in a month.

The founders who make it start selling halfway through the build. Across 100+ launches, Everest's best performers put unfinished products in front of customers, took the feedback, and co-created from there.

Your validation is already in a thread somewhere. Julia mined Facebook groups and subreddits where people were complaining about her problem, interviewed 20 people, then dropped her MVP into those same threads. Users in 30 minutes.

Money talks louder than enthusiasm. Nick went to market with $1,000 of Google Ads and no product. First lead booked a meeting, he built the demo overnight, and that client is still paying 12 months later. Demos get compliments. Payments get proof.

Don't hire a dev shop at zero-to-one. From the person who runs one. Craig's advice: at idea stage, get two days of training and build the amateur version yourself. Come to the experts when customers care about security and scale.

And don't get stuck in analysis paralysis. You don't need a sale to start - you need interest. The first response to ChatGPT's launch called it a crap idea.

Want to build fast with the guidance of the Engineering house who have helped over 100 startups (and Canva!) - you can 👇👇👇

AFC x Everest Engineering: a two-day product workshop in Melbourne

You come in with an idea. You leave with a solid, shipped product that real testers have used, plus a clear path to your first customers.

Day one you validate, spec, and build - and your MVP goes to testers overnight while Everest's India team works on it. Day two you come back to real feedback, refine, and map out how you get it to market.

It runs exactly how the panel said it should. Pressure test your idea with real people before you build, sell while you're building, and leave with something commercially grounded. Works whether you're technical or not.

Dates will be locked in with the cohort, so the workshop fits around the people in the room.

The first 5 spots get 15% off - that's $1,700 instead of $2,000, and some are already claimed after Thursday night. Email [email protected] to secure a discounted spot.

The Standup — week of 20 July 2026

The Standup

Week of 20 July 2026

Morning Megan. Quiet log week, so this pulls the best of the past several days. The headline: it was the biggest funding week of 2026 ($606.5m), but almost all of it sat in two mega-deals — the "missing middle" story is still very real.

📰 Ecosystem news

Albanese stands up an Office of AI — and says no to a copyright free pass. At the University of Sydney on 15 July, the PM announced a new Office of AI inside his own department to run "Australian Standards for AI," and confirmed Labor won't hand AI companies a copyright exemption to train on protected content for free. Founders building with AI should assume they'll need to license, not scrape. SmartCompany →

Data centres will have to pay their own way. Same framework: large data centres would be legally required to underwrite their own new power supply and full grid-connection costs. Draft standards go to National Cabinet in August. Watch this if you're compute-heavy. metatalks.ai →

Biggest funding week of 2026 — but it's top-heavy. $606.5m across seven rounds, the largest week since Dec 2025. AdvanCell and Cover Genius alone made up ~98%. Capital's back for standout deals; the middle is still thin. Cut Through Venture →

Seed money is chasing AI agents. The week's smaller cheques (BlueNexus, ESGAgent, Hyades) all went into AI platforms — agent building, ESG reporting, geospatial. A clear signal of where early-stage appetite sits. SmartCompany →

Qantas + Airbus back trash-to-jet-fuel. A $2m strategic bet on Wildfire's waste-to-fuel tech — corporates putting money into Aussie climate/aviation deep tech. Startup Daily →

AI creeps into regulated finance. LendUs picked up $5m for AI home-loan broking — worth watching as AI moves into compliance-heavy workflows. Startup Daily →

💰 Raises & funding

  • AdvanCell — US$315m (~A$452m) Series D. Brisbane radiopharma, targeted alpha therapies for cancer. Believed to be the largest-ever raise by a private Australian biotech. Led by Ally Bridge Group, co-led by Alpha Wave. Forbes →
  • Cover Genius — US$100m (~A$143.3m). Sydney insurtech embedding insurance at checkout; from Vista Credit Partners at a ~$1.9b valuation. TechTimes →
  • Southern Launch — $25m Series A. SA launch/re-entry/range services; includes $10m from the National Reconstruction Fund, led by Brindabella & Company. Hiring ~150. Startup Daily →
  • MAKO — $28m Series A. Shark-skin-inspired drag-reduction tech to cut aircraft fuel burn. Startup Daily →
  • Gridcog — $12.5m Series A. Energy-modelling SaaS for the clean-energy transition. SmartCompany →
  • BlueNexus — $2m seed. Sydney no-code AI "agent management platform" (build agents in ~20 min). Led by M31 Capital w/ Antler, Eastend Ventures, inSilico One. SmartCompany →
  • LendUs — $5m. AI home-loan broking. Startup Daily →

🚀 Opportunities (open)

  • Startmate Accelerator — flagship ANZ program, A$120k investment + mentor/investor network. Deadline 10 Nov 2026. Apply →
  • Google for Startups Accelerator: ANZ — 10-week equity-free, Seed–Series A AI/ML. Deadline was listed as 19 July so likely just closed — worth a quick check for a next intake before promoting. Details →

🛠️ Tool of the week: F5Bot

A community rec this week: F5Bot is a free service that emails you whenever your chosen keywords come up on Reddit (and Hacker News). Founders are using it to find the exact subreddits and threads where people are already discussing the problem they solve — gold for distribution and customer discovery. f5bot.com →

In Her Company is a third of the way to sold out.

Announced last week and taking place next week! Our women and non-binary founder dinner at Hap Cafe x Events is filling up - and we've widened the table.

A few of you told us you were eyeing a ticket but weren't sure you counted. You do. If you're a woman or non-binary person building in startups - founder or startup leader - this dinner is for you.

Filipino-inspired menu, great company, $89pp. 14 seats left.

Teach a room full of founders

Two ways to get in front of the AFC community with something practical - a workshop or an AFC Campus Session.

Workshops are in-person and hands-on. You teach founders a tangible skill, we build the room. Two formats:

  • Workshop Sponsor - $1,000. Ticketed entry ($20-45), 25-35 founders who paid to be there. We handle the venue, catering and promotion. You keep the captured content.

  • Curated Workshop - $3,000. Free for attendees. We hand-pick 30 best-fit founders by application, so the room is exactly who you want to teach.

AFC Campus Sessions - $1,500. A structured learning session, co-shaped with AFC and promoted to the full community. The recording lives permanently in the AFC Campus library on our site, filterable by topic - so founders keep finding it long after the live date. You keep the recording for your own channels too.

Every partnership includes newsletter promotion beforehand, a takeaways feature with your CTA after, and Slack and LinkedIn amplification.

If you've got something genuinely useful to teach, hit reply or head to our partnerships page for more info.
